There are no actions following the amendments to the law on the Constitutional Court of Armenia. This is what Minister of Justice of Armenia Rustam Badasyan told reporters today, touching upon the fact that Speaker of the National Assembly of Armenia Ararat Mirzoyan signed the law today.

“If you are referring to the nominations for judges of the Constitutional Court, these are the sequential actions following the constitutional amendments. The Constitution provides for a two-month period for constitutional bodies to nominate judge candidates, and time is flying, meaning those bodies need to nominate the candidates very soon. The law also eliminated the disparity between the Constitution and the law on the Constitutional Court,” Badasyan said, adding that it was impossible to adopt the constitutional amendments and the amendments to the Law on the Constitutional Court immediately.

He emphasized that the three judges of the Constitutional Court (Alvina Gyulumyan, Hrant Nazaryan and Felix Tokhyan) are no longer judges of the Constitutional Court following the constitutional amendments. As far as the candidates for judges of the Constitutional Court are concerned, when the candidate for judge of the Constitutional Court participates in the government session, the government’s candidate will be clear.

“There are principles under which we believe the Constitutional Court needs to be formed. Candidates need to be as apolitical as possible and people who can ensure independence of the judiciary. I can’t say which candidates are being considered, but I believe they will be announced in late July or early August,” Badasyan added.
