YEREVAN. – This year, like last year, we have an intensive "flourishing" of Lake Sevan. Evelina Ghukasyan, Director of the Institute of Hydroecology and Ichthyology of Armenia, mentioned this in a talk with journalists Wednesday.

According to her, the end of this "flourishing" does not mean anything yet, these blue-green algae sit on the bottom of the lake, increase the load of organic matter where they take away the oxygen from the bottom layers, and this creates bad conditions.

Ghukasyan added that these algae are dangerous in that they excrete the microcystin toxin, which is quite dangerous for swimmers and wildlife. "It could upset the balance of the lake," she stressed, in particular.
