The Ministry of Defense of Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) has submitted a petition to confer the highest title of Artsakh (Hero of Artsakh) upon Captain Armenak Urfanyan, who heroically died during the Four-Day Artsakh War in April 2016. This is what President of Artsakh Arayik Haroutyunyan posted on his Facebook page, adding the following:

“There have been several discussions on the self-dedication and patriotism of Armenak Urfanyan. I believe this will be the best decision to worthily appreciate his heroism ahead of the day marking the Declaration of Independence of the Republic of Artsakh. I will approve the decision with love and pride.”

During the Four-Day Artsakh War, Armenak Urfanyan’s company didn’t retreat and fought until the end during the unmatched battle with Azerbaijan and thwarted the adversary’s attacks a few times.

Armenak Urfanyan was born on January 28, 1990 in Yerevan. He was involved in taekwondo, sambo and judo. After graduating from school, he got accepted to the Artillery Troops Faculty at Vazgen Sargsyan Military Institute and later moved to the Infantry Division. After graduating from the Institute, he left for Artsakh for military service. In January 2016, the young man got engaged and was going to get married in the summer of that year.

By the decree of President of Bako Sahakyan dated April 6, 2016, Armenak Urfanyan was posthumously awarded the Medal “For Military Service” for defending the state border of the Republic of Artsakh and for his courage.

On May 28, 2016, Armenak Urfanyan was posthumously awarded the First Degree Order of the “Combat Cross” by the order of President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan.
