A US official told Reuters that the attack was carried out from Iran. At the same time, the source of the agency did not provide any additional information on this matter.
In addition, no one has declared their responsibility for what happened. A spokesman for the US State Department called it "an outrageous attack," while noting that no Americans were hurt and no damage was done to US government facilities in Erbil.
Iraqi state television also reported that 12 rockets fired from outside of Iraq hit Erbil.
U.S. troops stationed at Erbil's international airport complex have been hit in the past by rocket fire and drone attacks that U.S. officials blame on pro-Iran militia groups, but there have been no such attacks for months.
The last time ballistic missiles were fired at US troops was in January 2020, in retaliation by Iran for the killing of Iranian General Qassem Soleimani at Baghdad airport earlier that month.
No U.S. military personnel were killed in the 2020 attack, but many suffered head injuries.
Kurdish officials did not immediately reveal where the missiles hit. A representative of the regional authorities said that there were no interruptions in flights at the Erbil airport.
