We don't have a decision to participate in COP29 yet, we need to discuss, determine why we are going, what it will give to Armenia, what interests we have, at what level we are participating. Speaker of the National Assembly (NA) of Armenia, Alen Simonyan, stated this speaking with reporters at the NA Tuesday—and answering the question of whether attending the COP29 climate conference to be held in the Azerbaijani capital of Baku is on Armenia's agenda.

"In any case, the invitation and participation in COP29 is not Azerbaijan's monopoly, it is not Azerbaijan's event, it is a UN event, Armenia is also a member of the UN. I repeat: there is no decision, but we will discuss, we will decide," said Simonyan.

When asked whether Armenia did not regret that it supported this international event to be held in Azerbaijan, he responded: "No. How? We gat a captive in exchange. We did not support, but in a very bad situation, in a bad logic, we had to agree to it, that more than 30 captives return to Armenia. Should we have not agreed that a UN event should be held there? Of course not."

Simonyan noted that Armenia does not carry out any action aimed at canceling the COP29 or influencing it, and that is the right thing.

"Azerbaijan has a historic chance to send a positive message to the world, to act with a positive face, that is the issue of the [Armenian] captives [there]. I am interested in the presence of our 23 persons there, the peace treaty, and I believe Azerbaijan has a historic chance: what face and ‘business card’ it will act on. Whether it will use or not is another question," said the speaker of the Armenian parliament.
