We are against any road that will have a corridor logic in the territory of Armenia. This was stated by Iranian ambassador to Armenia Mehdi Sobhani, during a press conference Thursday.

He explained that Iran is not against the unblocking of roads if it is carried out on the basis of respecting territorial integrity and national sovereignty.

“We [i.e. Iran] are in favor of the unblocking of roads in the territory of Armenia, but this must be done on the basis of respecting territorial integrity and national sovereignty,” Sobhani said.

The Iranian envoy to Armenia recalled that Azerbaijan has always had ties with its exclave Nakhichevan, and after 2020, Azerbaijan has moved even closer to the borders of both Armenia and Iran.

“The previous route that Azerbaijan used was relatively long. We have proposed a new route, and after the completion of the road construction work, the road will be 50km [long]. Moreover, movement through Iranian territory is carried out in accordance with Iranian laws and within the framework of [Iran’s] sovereignty," Sobhani noted.
