Those who speak with nationalist and racist slogans are not representatives of the Iranian people and do not express the official position of Iran. This was stated by Iranian ambassador to Armenia Mehdi Sobhani, during a press conference Thursday—and commenting on the scandalous video recording made at Yerevan's Republic Square.

"Such actions should not raise doubts about Iran's position towards Armenia or bilateral relations. They [i.e. those in the video] are not representatives of the Iranian people. Perhaps they want to raise doubts among our Armenian friends. We must be vigilant so that we do not give in to this and do not play on the enemy's field," added the Iranian envoy to Armenia.

On January 30, a video was posted on a social media account of the “Independent Center for Strategic Studies” NGO where a group of men were loudly chanting “Karabakh, Karabakh” in Azerbaijani at Yerevan’s Republic Square. Later, the Armenian authorities stated that they were Azerbaijani Iranians.
