We have supported the efforts of the Armenian authorities to reach a peace agreement with Azerbaijan. French Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Jean-Noel Barrot stated this at a press conference in Yerevan on Monday—and answering the question of what steps France is taking to prevent escalation of tension and possible aggression by Azerbaijan.

“We [i.e. France] welcomed the agreement on the text of the document and called on Azerbaijan to sign it,” Barrot said.

The French FM stressed the key role of the region in terms of communication. According to him, signing a peace agreement is very important to Europe, and in case of escalation of tension in the region, France will issue calls.

“It would be tragic to lose this opportunity so close to peace,” Barrot added.

Then, the French FM again began to make judgments about Russia, assuring that Europe is not waging a war against the Russian people or state, but against “Putinization”—attempts to change borders in Europe.

“Therefore, we are helping Ukraine and its military efforts to contain aggression. Europe and France have no territorial claims against Russia,” said the French FM, adding that European sanctions on Russia will continue.
