World-renowned lawyer and international human rights advocate Robert Amsterdam, who is a close associate of US President Donald Trump, arrived in Armenia on an urgent visit on early hours of Monday (PHOTOS).

Speaking with reporters upon arrival in Armenia, Amsterdam noted that his main mission is the protection of the church and Christians, who, in his opinion, are illegally deprived of their freedom.

According to him, the church plays an important role in Armenia for religion, language, and people practicing Christianity—and not only in Armenia.

This visit by the first-class international lawyer on political matter to Armenia is unusual and is linked to several high-profile cases in the country: the case of the archbishops, the pressure against the Armenian Apostolic Church, and the detention of Russian Armenian entrepreneur and philanthropist Samvel Karapetyan.

The visit by Amsterdam is intended to monitor the real state of human rights and democracy in Armenia.
