If there is peace, and peace is established, then very soon some trade relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan will be established in an “embryonic” state, but they will develop over time, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated at a press briefing Thursday.

According to Pashinyan, the third point of the Washington declaration of August 8 states that the two parties attach great importance to internal transport relations; that is, to relations from Armenia to Armenia through the territory of Azerbaijan, as well as to relations from Azerbaijan to Azerbaijan through the territory of Armenia. He added that the aforesaid document talks also about international relations; that is, for Azerbaijan, to third countries through the territory of Armenia, and from Armenia to third countries through the territory of Azerbaijan.

Pashinyan explained that an unhindered link will be established from the main part of Azerbaijan to its Nakhichevan exclave through the territory of Armenia and, in accordance with the principle of reciprocity, the same applies to communication from Armenia to Armenia through Azerbaijan. He assured that everything will happen in accordance with the principle of reciprocity, including in terms of communication with third countries.

The Armenian premier assured that there are no unpublicized parts in the documents signed with Azerbaijan.

“On the other hand, discussions were held, views were expressed, negotiations were held on how to ensure everything,” he added.

As per Pashinyan, everything follows from the five conditions—i.e. principles – ed.—but the way of implementation is another matter.

“Those who travel with biometric passports know that in many countries they simply present that passport in the appropriate way, an automatic checking and passport control takes place, after which people continue on their way. This is one example, which does not mean that it will be applied precisely. We [i.e. Armenia] are ready for any simplification that fits within the framework of the five principles,” he emphasized.

The PM assured that not a single square millimeter of Armenia’s territory can be outside the country’s jurisdiction and control. Pashinyan explained that this follows from the text of the peace agreement, which sets the principles of territorial integrity, sovereignty, jurisdiction, inviolability of borders, and reciprocity.

“Yes, there are occupied territories. Both we and Azerbaijan have this problem. And especially in peacetime we will resolve all these matters in an atmosphere of mutual agreement, based on the already approved, signed, ratified provisions of the charter of the [Armenia-Azerbaijan] joint commissions on border delimitation and demarcation,” the Armenian premier concluded.
