All tools of democracy were used immediately after the 44-day war of 2020, when Armenia was plunged into a deep political crisis, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated in his address Tuesday at the autumn session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE).

According to him, in a sense, the 44-day war was part of a hybrid war whose objective was the statehood and independence of Armenia. He argued that it was democracy that literally saved the statehood and independence of the country.

Pashinyan added that the war and the disinformation accompanying it were tools that anti-democratic forces used when demanding that power in Armenia be transferred to them.

“However, the political force led by the non-violent ‘velvet revolution’ not only again received the majority of voters' votes [in the 2021 parliamentary elections], but also formed a constitutional majority [in parliament]," the Armenian PM noted.

In his opinion, this happened for one main reason: the Armenian people understood that these elections guarantee the people's power in Armenia. The people gave the ruling majority a mandate to protect the people's power and sovereignty, independence and statehood.

"And I can clearly state that today the power in Armenia belongs to the people, who are the guarantors of democracy in Armenia, and Armenia today is more independent than ever, more state-minded than ever, more sovereign than ever, more democratic than ever," the Armenian PM concluded.
