After being killed by U.S. forces in Iraq in 2020, Soleimani was buried in his hometown of Kerman.
January 3 marked the sixth anniversary of his death - martyrdom, as they call it in Iran. Every year on that day, people from different parts of Iran come to Kerman to pay tribute to the memory of one of the country’s most influential figures.
From early morning, thousands of people visited the “Martyrs’ Cemetery” in Kerman and laid flowers at General Soleimani’s grave.
The anniversary of his death is marked in Iran with a series of commemorative events known as “Resistance Week.” This year the commemoration events started on January 1 in Tehran with a memorial ceremony attended by Iran’s president, Masoud Pezeshkian.
Pezeshkian stated that threats of assassination cannot shake Iran’s determination. “Let our treacherous enemies not think that they can frighten us through martyrdom. Iran will steadfastly continue the path of its beloved martyrs, while also making efforts to address the challenges facing ordinary citizens,” the Iranian president stated.
