Referendum on minaret construction held in Switzerland displeased Iran. Iranian Foreign Ministry hosted Swiss Ambassador in Tehran Silvia Leu Agosti and noted a protest against vote of Swiss citizens.

Earlier, in the course of phone conversation, Iranian FM Manouchehr Mottaki told his Swiss counterpart Micheline Calmy-Rey that such a vote is unacceptable, in a country that advocates respect for democracy and human rights. “Religious values should never be called for a referendum,” said Mottaki. The vote damaged reputation of Switzerland amid Muslims all over the globe.

Iranian Foreign Minister demanded that Switzerland prevents the exercising of the ban on minarets’ construction. The referendum results burst indignation and protests in other Muslim countries, other than on diplomatic level.
