YEREVAN. – Armenia’s President Serzh Sargsyan on Sunday attended, at capital Yerevan City Hall, official opening of the Yerevan World Book Capital 2012 Program, and the Mayor’s formal reception.

The President addressed those present at the event.

“An unprecedented and a wonderful festival has commenced in the ancient Armenian land. Our Yerevan is declared World Book Capital 2012,” Sargsyan noted and added: “This is the greatest pride for a people who have a 500-year-old printing; it is the assessment of the services rendered to world culture. Our love toward our language, writing, and scripture has accompanied the Armenian people at all times in their history.”

In the Presidents words, more than fifty high-level guests from around thirty countries are in Armenia’s capital in connection with Yerevan’s declaration as the 2012 Book Capital of the World.

“Yerevan assumes the symbol of the Book Capital of the World on the eve of the 97th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide. This is yet another affirmation that it is impossible to kill the spirit and the people’s collective mind,” Serzh Sargsyan said and added: “Numerous cultural events are expected these days and, also, all through the year. They have but one objective: to yet again underscore the book’s role in our lives, to yet again show our place and being in the world map, and to yet again prove that we are a people of spirit and we know appreciating, preserving and enriching the spiritual and cultural heritage.”
