YEREVAN. – The U.S. Ambassador to Armenia John Heffern considers that the May 6 parliamentary elections in the country have registered considerable progress.

Talking to RFE/RL Armenian service, he said the embassy was attentively following the election process adding that progress was registered in certain fields. Heffern particularly pointed out the work of media, transparency in the precincts, cameras installed there and skills of the electoral committees’ members.

However, Heffern also said there were certain shortcomings. The Ambassador recalled the shortcomings registered by the OSCE/ODIHR observers, in particular bribery cases, misuse of administrative resources. Therefore, the government still has to take some efforts ahead of the next elections. 

The embassy is also working with the government to eliminate the existing problems, he stressed.
