YEREVAN. – The timing of instigating criminal case on Civilitas and its founder, former Armenian FM Vartan Oskanian is concerning, U.S. Ambassador to Armenia John Heffern said on Thursday in an interview to Radio Liberty. His comments came after the question what he thinks about Oskanian’s statement that it is a political decision regarding Civilitas foundation and the criminal case against it on alleged money laundering, by the Armenian secret service.

“The organization is a very important partner to the Embassy, to Armenia and to media as well. I am going to Civilitas to have a briefing and get familiarized with the details,” Heffern said.

Armenian News-NEWS.am earlier informed that Armenian National Security Service has instigated criminal case allegedly for legalizing huge amount of illegal money against Oskanian and Civilitas. To note, Oskanian ceased heading Civilitas after becoming MP. He joined Prosperous Armenia Party (PAP), later the party rejected to enter ruling coalition. Currently the PAP MP insists it is political pursue.
