The funeral of Grand Ayatollah Hossein Ali Montazeri was attended by thousands of mourners from all over Iran. The spiritual leader of Iranian opposition movement died yesterday at the age of 87.

According to breakingnews.ie website, unprecedented security measures were taken in the holy city of Qom.

Iranian authorities fear that funeral will arouse new waves of oppositional demonstrations. The foreign press was barred from covering events in Qom, the source says.

The death of Ayatollah put the country’s leadership in a fix. Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei issued a statement of condolence as the late was one of the 1979 Islamic Revolution patriarchs, though “pointedly alluded to Montazeri’s falling out with Ayatollah Khomeini, the founder of the Islamic Republic”, the Times reads.
