YEREVAN. – The Armenian National Assembly has been introduced a law proposal on increasing to up to 320 million cubic meters the volume of irrigation water release from Lake Sevan in 2012.

Pursuant to the current law, the maximum volume is 170 million cubic meters.

According to the Armenian State Committee for Water Management, the winter water melted too early this year, and, as a result, it penetrated into the soil and did not flow into the rivers. Also, the volume of water at the Aparan and Azat irrigative reservoirs is insufficient.

“I believe this [volume of water release] will affect neither the Lake nor the Sevan-Hrazdan Thermal Power Plant,” the aforesaid Committee’s Chairman Andranik Andreasyan told Armenian News-NEWS.am.

To note, Lake Sevan’s current water level is 1,900.48 meters above sea level.
