Ruling Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) candidate Hayk Haykyan became the winner in Sunday’s early mayoral elections held in the City of Ararat of Ararat Region.

According to the preliminary results by the Central Electoral Commission, Haykyan received 4,544 votes, whereas his challenger, non-pro-government Prosperous Armenia Party (PAP) member Samvel Barseghyan, garnered 4,214 of the ballots cast.

In line with official data, the voter turnout was 8,921 out of registered 13,218 voters.

Separately, in the prefect elections in Nshavan village, RPA member Pap Hakobyan received 427 votes, whereas his contender, non-party affiliate Myasnik Hovhannisyan, tallied 209 votes.

Six NGOs had petitioned to carry out an observer’s mission.

The PAP, however, had informed about numerous irregularities during the elections in Ararat.
