YEREVAN. – It would be very desirable if Armenia were to be made a special proposal on European Union (EU) association. 

President Serzh Sargsyan said the aforementioned at Tuesday’s joint news conference—in capital city Yerevan—of the Presidents of Armenia and France.

Commenting on Armenia’s Russia-led Customs Union (CU) accession process, the President specifically noted: “The foundation for the warm Armenian-Russian relations is the centuries-old friendship. We have lived [together] in one state [the ex-USSR] for a very long time; we are linked through relations, and this is the basis for our relations today.

“The economic interconnection [between Armenia and Russia] is on a very high level today. In addition, we have a bilateral friendship agreement with the RF [the Russian Federation]; [and] we are in the same security system.

“It [the CU] enables to import competitively priced energy to Armenia, which enables to have competitive products; this is the motive, the starting point of our decision [to join the CU].

“Joining the CU, however, does not mean we are terminating the cooperation with the EU. We will continue to deepen our relations with the EU because these relations not only are an opportunity to return to our rots, but to carry out rapid reforms in our country.”
