YEREVAN. – The view, according to which the idea of Pan-Turkism is passé, is wrong, and, first and foremost, a significant threat should be expected from it towards the Nagorno-Karabakh issue.

Armenian turkologist Ruben Melkonyan stated the aforementioned at a press conference on Monday.

In his words, a thaw in relations between the Turkic states is a disturbing factor for Armenia.

“And the Karabakh issue expands its borders. This matter likewise becomes a topic on the agenda of the meetings of the representatives of the Turkic-speaking countries,” Melkonyan noted.

The analyst also expressed a conviction that, in grand politics, Russia, China and Iran are the first enemies of Pan-Turkism.

“For us [Armenians], however, Pan-Turkism is expressed more significantly, since, first, Armenia, unlike Russia or Iran, is a weaker country to [be able to] counter it, and second, Pan-Turkism also has an anti-Armenian nature, from the ideological point of view,” Ruben Melkonyan stressed.
