The installation of a Georgian military base in Akhalkalaki is aimed at resolving Georgia’s internal problems, Javakheti-Armenian politician Davit Rstakyan told Armenian News-NEWS.am.
Rstakyan added, however, that the aforesaid is not spoken about openly, and noted that the Armenians of Javakheti—which is a predominantly-Armenian-populated part of Georgia’s southeastern Samtskhe-Javakheti Province—have problems with the Georgian authorities.
“Replacement of the former Russian military base with a Georgian one is perilous, since today, our problems are with the Georgian authorities, [and] within the framework of the Georgian state,” the Javakheti-Armenian politician said.
He stressed that the military base will have negative impact on the fight for the rights of the Javakheti Armenians.
“Georgia has excellent relations with Turkey; Armenian-Georgian relations are on a friendly level. [So,] what is the meaning and objective of deploying an army in the neighborhood of these two states?” Davit Rstakyan asked.
