YEREVAN. – Naira Zohrabyan, who is Chairperson of the Armenian National Assembly Standing Committee on European Integration, had sent an official letter to Martin Schulz, President of the European Parliament.

In the letter, Zohrabyan had demanded that the international organizations strongly condemn Azerbaijan, and conduct an independent examination of the dead body of Karen Petrosyan.

Petrosyan, a 32-year-old resident of Chinari village of Armenia’s Tavush Region, was captured by the Azerbaijanis on August 7, 2014, and on the next day, Azerbaijan informed that the young man had “suddenly” died of an “acute heart failure.” The Azerbaijani authorities had returned Petrosyan’s dead body to Armenia on October 10 of the year past.

And Schulz has sent a letter of reply to Zohrabyan.

“First and foremost, I express our deepest condolences, on behalf of the European Parliament, to the relatives of Karen Petrosyan, adding that I was personally horrified by the fact that the body was not allowed to be repatriated for more than three weeks after his death.

“The video attached to your letter was definitely very disturbing. It generates a need to conduct a fully transparent investigation, as well as an independent forensic examination to determine the exact causes for Karen Petrosyan’s death.

“The conflicting parties have a clear commitment to respect international humanitarian law, and they must treat captives and detainees consistent with international norms. The violation of such obligations is impermissible,” the European Parliament president’s letter runs, in particular.
