YEREVAN. -  Perspectives of investments in the new Armenian nuclear power plant unit are already emerging, Energy and Natural Resources Deputy Minister Areg Galstyan said in the Parliament Wednesday, when presenting the draft of the financial agreement with Russia on prolonging the Armenian NPP operation ($270 loan and grant of $30 million). 2-3 years ago the situation was more obscure, however currently the Armenian side has partners, who have stated about their readiness to participate in the project, he added.

The Russian side is ready to make investments in the project in the form of nuclear island equipment (roughly 35 per cent of the power plant’s value). Moscow is ready to provide the rest of the amount as a loan, but Armenia cannot afford such a loan, the Deputy Minister said.

On the other hand, Armenia cannot do without the sovereign credit guarantees. “This type of power plants, whose power capacity of nuclear unit is similar to ours, are currently built for $5 billion USD. We need the support of the private sector, but here, as I mentioned, perspectives are already emerging,” Areg Galstyan said.

The construction of the new power plant unit will start in 2018 at latest, he added.
