An international conference entitled “Surviving the Catastrophe” dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide was held in the famous Leuven University of Belgium Thursday. It was organized by the Leuven University Institute of Philosophy.   

The conference was attended by historians, international affairs specialists, experts and journalists from European countries, the United States, and Middle East. The conference participants discussed the questions on the historic, political, international, religious and legal aspects of the Armenian Genocide.   

The opening speech was made by Armenia’s Ambassador to Belgium, Head of Mission of Armenia to the European Union Tatoul Markarian. Highly appreciating the University professors’ initiative, the Ambassador mentioned the importance of the open and sincere discussion of the Armenian Genocide in the context of the recent developments. The Ambassador underscored the necessity of creating an internal and international social and political environment aimed for putting an end to Turkey’s denial.  Markarian also spoke about the importance of the discussions on genocide preventions held in the context of the Armenian Genocide Centennial.

The conference was followed by commemoration concert and reception.
