Iranian airlines have obtained fifteen used planes for the first time since 1995, reported Al Arabiya.

The embargo dating from 1995, and which prevents Western manufacturers from selling equipment and spare parts to Iranian companies, was partially lifted in early 2014.

Iran has also received two airplanes which, however, are too old to fly, and they will be used for spare parts, reported Gazeta.

The obtained aircrafts, more than half of which are Airbus A320, were built after 2003, and therefore the average age of Iran’s airliners—which before the recent purchases had around 140 aircrafts—has dropped from 20 to 19 years.

It is also noted that Iran would need 400 to 500 airliners in the next decade to upgrade the country’s fleet.
