Azerbaijan’s capital Baku showed evident disaffection towards the Armenian delegation during the European Games.

The tribunes constantly pressed the Armenian sportsmen, the German newspaper RP ONLINE reports.

The Armenian wrestler Roman Amoyan had a simple task: to win the Azeri sportsman and get the bronze medal. However Amoyan’s actual adversaries were the Azeri spectators who gathered in the Heydar Aliyev Sports Complex and expressed their negative attitude toward the wrestler through whistles and cries.

The spectators didn’t settle down even when the Armenian sportsman got an injury and the fight was stopped.

“Armenian blood was shed on the Azeri land”, one of the Azerbaijani newspapers wrote the next day, RP ONLINE reports.

When Thomas Bach, President of International Olympic Committee (IOC), spoke about sports as a force uniting nations, pointing out that during the European Games Armenians will be seen together with Azeris despite the decade-long Karabakh conflict, he was silent on one issue: Azerbaijani spectators don’t want to see the 25-member delegation of the neighbor country.

Even during the magnificent and extremely warm opening ceremony, the Armenian delegation was met with whistles, and even the foreign guests present at the Games noticed that low attitude, the newspaper concludes.
