An agreement prolonging deployment of Russian military base in Armenia is aimed at establishing peace and stability in the region, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said in Baku, RIA Novosti reported.

Russia is interested in peace and order in the region and the agreement should be regarded in this context, Medvedev said. He also stressed that protocol signed with the Armenian side does not change any principal conditions. “It means only one thing – deployment of base will be prolonged for several years,” he added.

A protocol prolonging deployment of the Russian military base #102 was signed in Yerevan on August 20. The document was signed by the Russian Defense Minister Anatoliy Serdyukov and his Armenian counterpart Seyran Ohanyan.Under the protocol, the military base will remain in Armenia for the next 49 years (instead of 25 years). It will also ensure Armenia’s security.
