Turkey fears Christianization, Zafer Yoruk, a Turkish expert in mass media and politics and lecturer of the Economic University of Izmir, told a September 4 press conference. According to him, Turkish society is divided: the first part is the elite committed to the pro-Islamic policy, and the rest opposing it.

The reason is that the Turkish Government is pressing the religious minorities. Late in the 12th century the Armenian and Greek minorities attracted two much attention, and the authorities feared Turkey would become a Christian country, he said.

Speaking of the Treaty of Sèvres, the expert said that it was a historical nightmare. While in Cilicia, Ataturk said that “there is no room for Armenians in these lands, they are and will remain Turkish.” However, the Treaty of Sèvres poses a threat to his words. Although not ratified, it does exist and poses a threat to Turkey. Turkey is regularly reminded of it, Yoruk said.
