Around 100 people were in attendance to Sunday’s funeral of the chairman of Diyarbakır Bar Association, Tahir Elçi, who was killed right before journalists in the primarily Kurdish-populated Diyarbakır city of Turkey.

Numerous people were in Diyarbakır to bid their farewell to Elçi, informed the website of Diyarbakır City Hall.

Tahir Elçi was killed in the Sur district of Diyarbakır on November 28. He was shot in the head while giving a press statement calling for an end to violence.

Elçi was detained several times and received death threats after saying the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) should not be regarded as a terrorist organization. In October, Elçi was detained by Turkish authorities on charges of disseminating “terrorist propaganda” on behalf of the PKK.
