ANTELIAS. – Catholicos Aram I of the Great House of Cilicia of the Armenian Apostolic Church had a telephonic conversation with President Serzh Sargsyan of Armenia, on Tuesday morning.

Aram I welcomed the adoption of the constitutional amendments, as a result of the respective referendum that was held in Armenia.

“This important step shall further strengthen democracy [in the country],” he specifically noted, informed the website of the Catholicosate of the Great House of Cilicia.

Aram I also reaffirm the Catholicosate’s assistance to the programs and activities toward strengthening and empowering the independence of Armenia.

The referendum on Armenia’s constitutional amendments was conducted on December 6.

Pursuant to these amendments, the country will make a transition from a semi-presidential to a parliamentary system of governance, and conduct completely proportional parliamentary elections.

According to preliminary data by the Central Electoral Commission, a total of 825,851 (63.35%) voters said “yes,” whereas 421,600 (32.35%) others voted “no” in this plebiscite.
