YEREVAN. – At night, the police confiscated the covering on the parasol put by the New Armenia Public Salvation Front members, who are on the ninth day of their sit-in at Liberty Square in downtown capital city Yerevan.

New Armenia member Gevorg Safaryan on Wednesday told about the aforementioned to Armenian News-NEWS.am.

“The night passed as normal,” Safaryan said. “It’s just that we had to put a bag on one of the parasols so that it would be warm. The police collected and took [it] away. But we did nothing; we let [them] take [it]. Of course, we said this was unlawful, but it didn’t help. We were here at night with two dozen members.”

New Armenia Public Salvation Front is staging a sit-in at Liberty Square since December 1, and demanding annulment of the recent referendum on constitutional amendments and resignation of President Serzh Sargsyan.

The referendum on Armenia’s constitutional amendments was conducted on December 6.

Pursuant to these amendments, the country will make a transition from a semi-presidential to a parliamentary system of governance, and conduct completely proportional parliamentary elections.

The opponents of these amendments, however, consider them to be primarily the authorities’ attempt to hang on to power.

According to preliminary data by the Central Electoral Commission, a total of 63.35 percent of the voters said “yes” to these amendments, whereas 32.35 percent voted “no” in this plebiscite.
