YEREVAN. – The television companies in Armenia were neutral in covering the political and public figures’ press conferences that were held during the campaign season of the referendum on constitutional amendments.

Chairman of the Armenian Committee for the Protection of Freedom of Speech (CPFS), Ashot Melikyan, stated about the above-said at a press conference on Friday.

He noted that, from October 27 to December 4, they studied 110 press conferences, in which 172 speakers from various political forces took part.

“By and large, the TV companies covered [them] neutrally, which is very good,” Melikyan said.

The CPFS head noted, however, that the TV companies were not too active toward these press conferences.

“The TV companies attended the press conferences, but they didn’t broadcast [them],” Ashot Melikyan added.

The referendum on Armenia’s constitutional amendments was conducted on December 6.

Pursuant to these amendments, the country will make a transition from a semi-presidential to a parliamentary system of governance, and conduct completely proportional parliamentary elections.

The opponents of these amendments, however, consider them to be primarily the authorities’ attempt to hang on to power.

According to preliminary data by the Central Electoral Commission, a total of 63.35 percent of the voters said “yes” to these amendments, whereas 32.35 percent voted “no” in this plebiscite.
