Jerusalem’s Church of the Holy Sepulchre, where Jesus is said to have been buried before his resurrection, will undergo major restoration in May.

The Armenian, Greek and Catholic churches have already agreed on this and the work will be launched 2 weeks after Orthodox Easter, the Jerusalem Patriarchate representatives told Armenian News – NEWS.am correspondent.

“We are celebrating Easter on May 1, and 2-3 weeks after this we will already start the restoration. The work will be carried out by the Technical Bureau, which includes representatives of three churches,” the Patriarchate representatives said.  

According to the preliminary assessment, the entire restoration will cost 3 mln euro: each patriarchate will contribute 1 mln euro.

“The work is scheduled to be completed in 8-12 months. During that period the site will remain open to pilgrims,” the Patriarchate representatives stressed.

On March 22, the Armenian, Greek and Catholic patriarchs read out a general announcement on the restoration in front of the Holy Tomb at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. The heads of the specialist group, Antonia Molopulo, was also present during the announcement.
