YEREVAN. – Prior to attempt of a military coup, Turkey intended to revise the policy of delaying the process of normalization of relations with Armenia, head of Regional Studies Center Richard Giragosian said during discussion on the consequences of Turkey coup attempt on relations with Armenia.

According to him, this was due to the following factors - the normalization of relations with Israel and, most importantly, the restoration of relations with Moscow.

“The idea before the coup was to take the opportunity of working with Moscow in terms of exerting pressure on Armenia in order , most probably, to hand over the two regions to Azerbaijan. It also had to be reflected in the meeting of the OSCE Minsk Group in Ankara scheduled two days after the coup,” Giragosian said pointing to involvement of Moscow as a key factor.

Armenia, the expert continued, must pay attention not only to what is happening directly in Turkey, but also to the pressure on the issue of Nagorno-Karabakh, and the apparent desire of Turkey to again become involved in the process of normalizing relations with Armenia.

“Unfortunately, Armenia is not very well prepared at this stage. In the current domestic situation, Armenian president, as a famous chess player, apparently, annulled the match. This may be another missed opportunity,” he said.
