Turkish PM Binali Yildirim urged U.S. to speed up procedures for extraditing U.S.-based Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen accused by Ankara of participation in coup attempt, ABC News reported.

According to PM, Turkey and the U.S. have a bilateral agreement on extradition, so the extradition process should not be delayed.

“We want the process to be accelerated. This man was the leader of the coup. What are we waiting for?  The United States has every kind of information on the incidents this terror organization and its leader have been involved in. Our request is clear: that he be temporarily detained and then returned,” Yildirim told representatives of the foreign press in Istanbul on Saturday.

Earlier Washington asked from Ankara evidence that Gulen was involved in the attempted coup of July.

On July 15 the group of rebels made military coup attempt in Ankara and Istanbul, Turkey. According to recent data, 246 Turkish citizens were killed, apart from rebels, more than 2,000 people were injured, the coup attempt was suppressed. Turkish government accused cleric Fethullah Gulen of organizing a military coup attempt and demanded that the US extradite him. Gulen himself denounced rebellion and declared non-participation in it.
