YEREVAN. – Two months ago, Levon Hayrapetyan, who was sentenced in Moscow to prison for fraud, was relocated to a jail in the Republic of Mordovia, a federal subject of Russia, where the prison conditions are very bad.

Attorney Haykaz Makaryan, a member of the group that supports this Armenian businessman and benefactor, told the aforementioned at a press conference on Monday.

“He is sitting [in prison] under terrible conditions in Mordovia,” he said. “He is walking, eating somehow. The humidity in prison, these conditions are contraindicated to him.”

Makaryan also called upon the president and prime minister of Armenia, and requested a meeting with them. In his words, the Armenian authorities need to focus on the matter regarding Levon Hayrapetyan.

“He has dual citizenship [i.e. Armenian and Russian],” added the attorney. “Pursuant to agreements between the two countries, an extradition can be made. There exists a matter of illness; he needs to be kept under house arrest.”

Haykaz Makaryan also noted that Hayrapetyan was sentenced without evidence.
