The European Parliament has called on Turkey to release all journalists that were detained with no significant legal proofs of crime.  The attempted coup in Turkey of July 15, 2016 cannot be used as a pretext to silence the media and the opposition, reads the resolution adopted by the European Parliament, reports the DW.

After a failed attempt the Turkish authorities detained at least 99 journalists and writers; at least 330 journalists have been deprived of media accreditation. In addition, about 100 media outlets were closed in Turkey, due to which more than 2,300 people lost their jobs. According to the data of the European Parliament, imprisoned journalists have limited access to legal services. They are kept in custody in conditions that humiliate human dignity, get threatened and tortured. The resolution strongly condemns the military coup at that.

Turkey ranks the 180th country in context of the freedom of press out of 180 countries by the annual report of the Reporters without Borders. Earlier, the Human Rights Watch accused the Turkish government of using torture against prisoners, including beating and sexual violence.
