The President of the European Parliament Martin Schulz has condemned the arrest of the chief editor of an opposition newspaper. He raised a concern about mass purges in Turkey, which he believes are politically motivated. " The detention of Murat Sabuncu and other Cumhuriyet journalists is yet another red-line crossed against freedom of expression in Turkey," Schultz wrote in Twitter. He also announced that he admired the courage of the Turkish citizens who defended democracy after the coup attempt.  "Debate on death penalty, detaining unaligned mayors, appointing university staff: polarization rather than unity is what Turkish government is after," wrote Schulz. As he mentioned “ongoing massive purge seems motivated by political considerations, rather than legal and security rationale.”
