The Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel is concerned about the pressure put by the Turkish authorities on the press. She called into question the legitimacy of the detention of an opposition newspaper editor-in-chief.

“The federal government and me are very much concerned about the constant pressure on the freedom of press in Turkey,” she said, Reuters reports. 

On October 31, the editor-in-chief of Cumhuriyet opposition newspaper, Murat Sabuncu, was detained along with thirteen of his workers.
