YEREVAN. – In his remarks, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg forgot to mention Armenia as a country that borders Turkey.

Head of the National Assembly of Armenia delegation to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly (PA), Koryun Nahapetyan, stated the above-said at a press conference on Friday.

As per the MP, the Armenian delegation, however, was given the opportunity to pose a question to Stoltenberg, during the NATO PA plenary session.

“We reflected on the prospects for the opening of the Armenian-Turkish border, and NATO’s possible assistance in this matter,” said Nahapetyan. “During his [i.e. Stoltenberg’s] speech at the German Marshall Fund [of the US] on November 18, he had mentioned about the strategic geographical location of Turkey. (…). But he had forgotten to indicate Armenia [as one of Turkey’s bordering countries]. We raised this matter, and asked what the reason was for this.”

The MP added that Armenia also borders Turkey, but the latter has unilaterally closed its border with Armenia since the 1990s, and this is a serious challenge for regional security.

“Stoltenberg responded that the opening of the Armenian-Turkish border is the task of the two countries, and [that] NATO cannot play any role in this matter,” concluded Koryun Nahapetyan.
