The U.S. Ambassador to Armenia Richard Mills along with the Culture Minister of Armenia Armen Amiryan on Friday marked the end of works aimed at repairing and preserving Armenia artist Hakob Hakobyan’s mural “In the Mountains” in Gyumri.

The reparation of the mural was carried out by the U.S. Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation. Thanks to the financial means provided by the fund, the mural has been moved from abandoned factory building, repaired and preserved, and put on display to the public again, this time at the Achemyan State Drama Theater in Gyumri.

According to Mills, this mural, the end of whose reparation work we mark here, was in the abandoned factory building for several years, away from eyes and covered in dust. Now the public will see this work by Hakob Hakobyan, learn about its history, this inspiring them to create new works of art reflecting Armenia’s spirit, the Ambassador noted.

The author of the mural is Armenian painter Hakob Hakobyan (1923-2013), whose works are considered national treasures. His murals are included in the list of preserved historical and cultural values of Shirak province.

The reparation of the mural “In the Mountains” was carried out by the Minas Avetisyan Cultural Foundation. Renowned expert of the Restoration Institute in Florence, Italy, Fabrizio Iakopini was also involved in the work. Minas Avetisyan Cultural Foundation was founded in 2003 by the son of famous artist Minas Avetisyan, Arman Avetisyan, to ensure the preservation of murals by his father and other artists, taking them out of abandoned buildings and moving them to safe places.

In Ambassador’s words, the work of the art conservator is the manifestation of love and respect to painters and their works, whose results we can all see today.

Culture, art and traditions help identify Armenia's uniqueness and Americans share this love for art, Mills noted.
