YEREVAN. – The history of snowman goes back to the Middle Ages. When and where it was decided to build the first snowman is unknown.

However, it is known that snowmen were built in Europe and in Russia. The first record of the snowman goes back to the 18th century. For the first time the image of snowman appeared as an illustration for children's song book published in Leipzig.

Snowmen was considered an angry figure as it symbolized winter, with it freezing cold. It is remarkable that Russian snowman had female character.

Different nations had beliefs connected with snowmen. In the Middle Ages it was considered that one cannot build a snowmen during full moon. There was a legend in Norway that it was dangerous to look at snowmen through window late in the evening.

Only in the 19th century the snowman acquired good character. A bucket on snowman's head symbolized prosperity in the house. In Romania, for instance, there is a tradition to decorate a snowman with “beads” made of garlic.
