In 1985, the United Nations General Assembly proposed governments—through Resolution A/RES/47/3—to annually celebrate, on December 5, the International Volunteer Day for Economic and Social Development.

This international observance, which is now called International Volunteer Day, offers an opportunity for volunteer organizations and individual volunteers to make their contributions visible to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals.
