YEREVAN. - The human rights area is in a horrible condition in Armenia.

Human rights lawyer Artur Sakunts told the aforementioned to Armenian News – NEWS.am.

''We are getting alarms right now on that during the day the Vanadzor police officers called citizens on their lists to the police department and under various fake reasons for a so-called interview in order to urge them not to go to Yerevan to take part in the protest dedicated to the Human Rights Day. These are apparently actions which grossly hinder the citizens' will, free expression of will and their free movement. And this is the real picture of what attitude the Armenian law enforcement bodies and authorities have towards the human rights.

After all this there is no point in speaking about any changes, since on the Human Rights Day human rights are violated in the most cynical way,'' he said.

According to the lawyer, the area can be improved only if the citizens pursue their objectives, do not get used to the existing practice and struggle for their rights. Referring to the claims refuting the existence of political prisoners in the country, Sakunts noted that besides Shant Harutyunyan and his friends at least 26 other citizens are subjected to obvious political repression.

To the question as to how he assesses the work of Human Rights Defender Arman Tatoyan, Sakunts noted: ''The Ombudsman is more reserved during sensitive political topics. He is also not consistent and principled specifically in issues related to political repressions and political prisoners.''

December 10 marks the Human Rights Day.
