The political settlement of the Syrian conflict will depend on the actions of the new US administration and mutual understanding between Washington and Moscow, stated the UN Secretary General's special envoy on Syria Staffan de Mistura, reports Al Jazeera. The text of his speech made in Geneva is posted by the UN.

Referring to the political processes in Syria, De Mistura said, that there was a period of transition in the US, and it was necessary to wait and see the new president's policies and priorities. He recalled, that when the US and Russia agree on something, then the regional players adjust to it accordingly.

The UN special envoy said, that there is an impetus for regional players, including Iran, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey, also Egypt, Jordan, and Iraq. "We need to see what will be the policy of the new US administration, and if mutual understanding between the US and Russia is possible," said Mistura.
