The coldest place on Mars has been revealed as the picture of the South Pole of “the red planet” is published on the official site of NASA, RIA Novosti reported.

The photo shows the polar cap, which was formed due to outgrowth of dry ice (carbon dioxide).

It arises from carbon dioxide, which falls from the atmosphere in the form of snow in the winter. In cold time temperature in this region can reach -130° Celsius.

The picture was taken by high-resolution camera HiRISE installed on the MRO orbital station.
