A gunman opened fire on partygoers at a New Year’s Eve celebration in Reina nightclub in Istanbul, Turkey, killing 35 people and wounding 40.

At first, the gunman fired shots at a police officer and a civilian. Subsequently, however, he opened random fire.

According to media reports, there were 700 to 800 people at the nightclub during the attack.

But special forces took action, and killed the gunman that was hiding at the nightclub premises, according to The Guardian daily of Great Britain.

Turkish authorities announced that the gunman had acted alone.

It is reported that he was dressed as Santa Claus.
