Turkey has made another step toward transitioning from a parliamentary to a presidential system of governance in the country.

The Turkish parliament passed the relevant draft amendments, in the first reading, reported RIA Novosti news agency of Russia.

The ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) had submitted the respective draft constitutional amendments to parliament.

Pursuant to these amendments, incumbent President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan shall oversee the Turkish Armed Forces General Staff and the intelligence, which currently are under the PM’s jurisdiction.

In addition, after the final adoption of these amendments, Erdoğan will be given the right to give orders to and appoint ministers, and to put constitutional amendment-related matters to referendum.
