YEREVAN. – A demonstration against Belarus’s intention to extradite Israeli citizen—and well-known blogger—Alexander Lapshin to Azerbaijan was held Monday outside the Embassy of Belarus in Yerevan, the capital city of Armenia.

The young protesters were chanting, “Karabakh is not Azerbaijan” and “Don’t support the [President] Aliyev authorities [of Azerbaijan],” the Armenian News-NEWS.am reporter informed from on location. Also, they wished to meet with the Belarus ambassador and hand him a letter of protest.

The ambassador, however, did not come down. As a result, the picketers left their letter of protest and signs in front of the embassy door, and they left chanting, “Shame, shame [on you]!”

But a demonstrator told Armenian News-NEWS.am that this action of theirs will continue.

“In the letter addressed to the embassy, we wrote that Azerbaijan has violated human rights,” he noted, in particular.

After his visits to Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh) in 2011 and 2012, Alexander Lapshin was “blacklisted” by Azerbaijan. In June 2016, however, he paid a visit to Azerbaijan, but with a Ukrainian passport. Subsequently, he issued several articles criticizing the Azerbaijani authorities. Afterward, the Azerbaijani authorities issued an international search for this famous blogger. And on December 15, 2016, he was detained in the Belarus capital city of Minsk, and based on this international search.

The media report that the Belarusian authorities plan to extradite Alexander Lapshin to Azerbaijan.
